John Shaver

John Douglas Shaver, formerly of Mannington WV, died on December 13, 2015 after a brief fight with cancer. He was born on April 3, 1942, a graduate of Mannington High School Class of 1960.

Mr. Shaver was preceded in death by his Stepfather Jessie Smith Brown, Fathers-in-law Arza G. King & Ora Haught, and Mother-in-Law Marvel D. Haught. He is survived by his Mother Bettie J Brown, his former wife Judy Anne King-Shaver, Sons Douglas D. Shaver of Fairmont & David J Shaver of Akron and his Aunt June Shaver of Mannington.

Mr. Shaver completed his Army basic training with a broken leg in a cast. He was an Expert Carbine and sharp shooter with badges for m-1 and m-14 rifles. He was part of the 87 Ordinance Company serving in Germany as a mechanic and truck driver earning a Driver’s Badge before returning to Fort Hood, Texas. He loved to drag race earning multiple trophies upon his return to the States.

He was a machinist at National Steel Corporation of Weirton, WV which became Weirton Steel Corporation ESOP from which he retired. He was a volunteer for the Oakland Fire Department of Wylie Ridge in Hancock County. During his tenure he maintained the equipment and fire trucks from his skills obtained in the Army. He enjoyed traveling by RV taking his family along the East Coast, Midwest, and South West of the United States.

On weekends he enjoyed camping at Tomlinson Run State Park. He and his sons were RC model airplane enthusiasts and were members of the Wintersville, Ohio Skyhawk’s RC Club earning awards for flying 52 weeks out of the year. He became an advisor for the Junior Achievement Program of Weirton WV when his sons attended. After his retirement, he enjoyed restoring antique farm equipment especially John Deere two-cylinder tractors.

He was one of the founding members of the North East Ohio Two-Cylinder club. He was an Ordained Elder of the Presbyterian Church USA and served as a trustee of the Oakland Presbyterian Church. He was instrumental in leading the restoration of the interior of the church in the 1980’s. He was later a member of the Cove Presbyterian Church of Weirton WV.

There will be no public visitation or funeral services. On Thursday, December 17, 2015, family and friends are asked to meet in the funeral home parking lot no later than 10:20am to leave for the West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton where a committal service will be held at 12pm. The United States Army and the Marion County Veterans Council will accord Full Military Rites. A Memorial service will also be held Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 1pm at the First Presbyterian Church, 301 Jackson St., Fairmont, WV.
