John served his country in the United States Army for nearly 10 years, including a tour of Vietnam. He is a member of the UMWA. He worked at Martinka Mines until its closing and a short period of time at Federal #2.

John is survived by his ex-wife and life companion/caregiver Judith P. Sloan Thompson. Judith and John have spent 45 years together. She has been his caregiver since an ATV accident that left him paralyzed in 1994. He is also survived by 3 children, Joy Thompson Beveridge and husband Michael D. Beveridge, Jr. of Mannington, Kimberly Ann Thompson DeWitt of Clarksburg, and Carl Ross Rice and wife Joyce Maxwell Rice of Mannington.

John also was blessed with 8 beautiful grandchildren whom he loved dearly, CJ and Cayla Rice, Jeremy and Brittany DeWitt, and Gabriel, Shelby, Abby and Lainie Beveridge. He also leaves behind two sisters, Janice Thompson Moyers and husband Ron Moyers, and Norma Jean Thompson Lee, and two brothers, Raymond Thompson and wife Geraldine, and Danny Ray Thompson, all of which reside in Texas.

John is preceded in death by both parents and a brother, Warren Thompson.

In addition to spending time with family, John enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He will be missed by his loved ones dearly. He is now enjoying walking after 25 years on streets of gold and rejoicing with our Lord.

The family wishes to thank WV Caring Hospice for the fine care they gave John, especially nurse Becky who became family to us and too nurse Whitney who helped us through a couple rough week-ends. We will never forget your kindness.

Joy, I just saw this. With our busy lives, kids, family things get put to the side. But one thing is for sure, I consider you a friend. If you need me I'm just a phone call away. I will be thinking of you and your fam, especially that sweet Mamma of yours.
Love you, Kara
