Joyce Elaine Thorne, 72, of Edgewood, WV, received her angel wings on Friday, August 21, 2015, after a brave, courageous battle with cancer. She passed away at home surrounded by loved ones. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Joyce’s fighting spirit and amazing smile have touched many lives and she will long be remembered as an inspiration.

Joyce was born January 7, 1943 in Rachel, WV. She was the daughter of the late Donald K. Russell and Gladys "Gay" Stout Russell, who survives and lives in Mannington, WV. She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald G. “Grubby” Russell whom she loved dearly and missed.

Left to cherish wonderful memories is her husband of 54 years, Sanson "Wayne" Thorne, Jr. They were married on July 16, 1961 in Rachel, WV. She is also survived by one son, Donald Wayne “Donnie” Thorne and wife Heidi of Bridgeport, WV and one daughter, Margaret “Peggy” Thorne-Church and husband Dr. David Church of Bridgeport, WV. She is also survived by one sister, Cheryl King and husband Russ of Charlotte, NC, and one brother Roger Russell and wife Debbie of Mannington, WV.

Joyce enjoyed her grandchildren and loved spending time with them. She especially loved watching them play sports. Joyce and Wayne rarely missed a sporting event. Loving memories will remain for Megan and Alex Thorne; Jordan, Joshua and Chris Knight; Joe Michael and Travis Kirtner; Bryan and Daniel Church. Joyce is survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved and was very special to her. She is survived by her ex son-in-law, Rodney Knight, and her ex-daughter-in-law, Linda Thorne. Joyce was a 1960 graduate of Farmington High School. Joyce and Wayne enjoyed getting together with her classmates for dinner. Joyce enjoyed attending the All Farmington High School Reunions held every year.

Joyce was a Registered Nurse and had retired from United Hospital Center with 20 years of service. She was a former Critical Care Nurse and Clinical Coordinator. Joyce graduated from Fairmont State College in 1987. She was proud of obtaining her degree and enjoyed her nursing career.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions be made in Joyce’s memory to the DHS Foundation (Davis House), P.O. Box 1188, Elkins, WV 26241. The Davis House is a “home away from home” for patients that must travel to receive cancer treatment. If you plan to attend the viewings or funeral, feel free to wear red. Red was Joyce’s favorite color and the family wants to celebrate her life. Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort, on Tuesday, August 25, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Masters Funeral Home, 209 East Main Street, Mannington, on Wednesday, August 26 ,from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The funeral will be held at Masters Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 with Reverend Charles Fancher of Farmington presiding. Interment will follow at the Huey-Thorne Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be extended to the family at
