Rebecca “Becky” Melkus, age 83 of Mannington WV, passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Fairmont Medical Center after a short illness. She was born May 12, 1940 in Bristol, WV, a daughter of the late Millard and Josephine (Kelley) VanScoy.

Becky was a graduate of Victory High School. She served as State Worthy Advisor for International Order of Rainbow Girls visiting every assembly in the State. Throughout her life she was active in numerous volunteer roles in the Mannington community including serving as Cub Scout Den Mother and Sunday School Teacher. In the late 70’s, she and her husband Jim started and ran the Mannington Teen Center where they mentored many young men and women of Mannington.

She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Mannington serving the children’s ministry. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Jaycee-ettes. Becky actively participated in Jaycees, Elks and Moose functions with her husband Jim. She served Marion County as a volunteer for Marion County Rescue Squad from the late 70’s until the late 90’s. In that time, she became an EMT, then a Paramedic eventually serving as Assistant Chief for the Mannington Station. She mentored many of the young EMS providers that are now excellent providers through the State of WV. Becky dedicated her life helping the people of Marion County.

Becky is survived by a son, Michael Melkus (wife Terry), and grandson Caleb Melkus of Charleston, SC; grandchildren Matthew Melkus and Danielle Melkus (their mother, Lori Truitt), great-grandchildren Levi, Matthew and Alaina, all of North Carolina; a sister, Linda Powers (husband Mike) of Mannington, WV; and brother-in-law Konrad Melkus (wife JoAnn) of Bridgeport, WV. Also, special friends that gave their love and support, Paula and Chuck Wood, and Trevor Hurst.

In addition to her parents, Becky was preceded in death by her husband James (Jim) Melkus; son, William (Bill) Melkus; and grandson Alex Michael Melkus.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Friends of the Mannington Public Library, 109 Clarksburg St Mannington, WV 26582.

Family and friends may call at Masters Funeral Home in Mannington, WV on Monday, December 18, 2023 from 10:00am – 12:00pm with the funeral service immediately following the visitation.
