Bernard Masters

Bernard Masters, age 91 of Mannington, WV went to his heavenly home on Saturday, April 27, 2019, after a long illness. He was born April 7, 1928 in Mannington, WV to the late Okey Lee and Jessie Olive Toothman Masters. He married Jo Ann Cunningham on Feb. 7, 1948. They had 54 years of marriage until her death on July 11, 2001.

Bernard will be remembered for being a hard worker, a wonderful singer and for his great sense of humor. He pitched on several fast-pitch softball teams, the last being in Hundred. While he could still drive, he loved to visit his friends at the Rite-Aid, Red Dot Pharmacy, and the Mannington Public Library, who were all so kind to him. He was a member of the East High Street United Methodist Church and served as a trustee. His church family was very important to him and though he couldn’t attend recently, he continued to love and pray for them. His favorite things were reading, visiting, and watching sports. The Masters Home was always filled with music and for several years, Bernard and his girls sang as a gospel trio.

After graduating from Mannington High School, he began his work career at Adamston Flat Glass in Clarksburg. After working there for several years, he was hired at Consol’s #9 Mine in Farmington and was working there on November 20, 1968 when the mine disaster occurred. He then worked at Robinson Run #95 until his retirement.

Bernard is survived by two daughters, Jane Ann (Donald) Cooper and Susan Kay Masters; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Nick Nicholas, Leigh Ann (Ryan) Curry, and Jim Cooper; six great-grandchildren, Cassidy and Tyler Curry, Gage and Jossalyn Cooper and Emalee and Morgan Nicholas; a brother, Dallas Masters of Levittown, PA; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Masters and Violet Masters; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A special cousin, Frank Toothman also survives.

In addition to his parents and wife Jo Ann, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Chester and Darrell Masters, and most recently, a precious sister, Jean Efaw; two nephews, Vernon Masters and Bob Grim; and a niece, Sue Cole.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Amedysis Hospice for your support and caring. You have all earned a star in your crown!

Bernard was the best man I ever knew. He was the father I wish I had and the last of the greatest generation in our family. Bernard and Jo Ann Masters treated me like a son and for that I will always be thankful.
