David "Dave" Carter Chappell, age 74 of Plum Run Community, Mannington, WV, entered his heavenly home on Thursday, December 15th, 2022, after a courageous battle of cancer over seven years. He was born September 11, 1948 in Cullman, Alabama. David was the son of the late Ollie Roscoe and Evelyn Orene (Burgess) Chappell.
He is survived by his wife Lorna (Fluharty) Toothman and sister Jean (Chappell) Conn of Logan, Alabama; his two sons David (Mellissa) Chappell, and Willy (Christy) Chappell of Cullman, Alabama; his grandchildren Kaitlin (Caleb) Rogers, Kristian (Sydney) Chappell, and Keaton Chappell, Conner and Sidney Abreu: great-grandchildren Adelaide Chappell and Chappell Rogers; and two nieces, Cynthia Conn Vance and Teresa Conn Screws, and their families.
He also loved and cared for Lorna's family as his own: Joe and Tane Toothman, Billy, Kay and Ariel Toothman, Matthew, Caroline, Esme and Emma Toothman; Freddie, Melonie and Mitchel Poling, Matti (Poling) and Alex Cross, Maggie (Poling) and Adam Kephart; Russell and Jennifer Toothman, Brooke and Kelsey Toothman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his second wife Sandra Jean (Harkness) Chappell.
What do you say about a man like David? I've always wondered why we write these when people pass instead of while they're still here. I hope he knew how much we loved and cared for him, but I have a feeling that love and adoration is nothing compared to what he's experiencing at the feet of Jesus. Dave was a Christian by faith and attended Dents Run Baptist Church.
Dave was a father, a husband, a son, a brother, a carpenter, a hunter, a farmer, and a friend. He was tough as nails and as stubborn as they come. That's what made him strong and so very special. He taught his oldest son, David, how to have wit and how to make it work for him in life. He taught his son, Willy, the art of construction, which came in handy as he built a life for his family.
Dave met his wife, Lorna later in life and the two enjoyed the beauty of retirement, traveling, and the joy of family. She cared for him throughout his battle against cancer and was there for his last breath. She will get a few extra jewels on her crown in heaven. Dave was known for his grit and sarcasm. He always put up a fight for what's right and always made a joke along the way. There's a hole left in the world where he filled it with his own special kind of love.
Lorna would like to thank the staff at the Infusion Center at Mon General Hospital, Dr. Darrell Saunders, Dr. Sandra Cunningham, and Pastor Doug Cyphers for their compassion and special care for Dave.
Friends and Family may call at Masters Funeral Home in Mannington. In honor of his wishes, cremation was chosen and a Memorial Service will be held on Sunday February 12, 2023 from 12-2:00pm with services beginning at 2:00pm with Pastor Doug Cyphers and Pastor Larry Kincell officiating.
