Robert Delnor Hartzell Sr., age 84, of Rachel, WV, passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at his residence. He was born July 14, 1935 in Rachel, WV, a son of the late Ira Hartzell and Bessie Lee Covey Hartzell Bradley. He was raised by Jerry and Mary Jane Covey.

He is survived by two sons and two daughters, Robert D. Hartzell Jr. of Rachel, Dannette and John DeVaul of Fairmont, Richard I. and Michele Ann Hartzell of Arbovale, WV, and Crystal Anne and Freeland Miller of Mannington; 8 grandchildren, Faith Anne Shaver and husband Cody, Bobby Hartzell, Fletcher and Trevor DeVaul, Natalie and Lindsey Hartzell, Nakell Howes and husband Bud, Freeland “Bub” Freeland and wife Kaylin; 5 great-grandchildren, Easton and Everly (Bright Eyes) Shaver, Riley and Phosten Howes, and Hayden (My Girl) Miller; two brothers, Buck Bradley and Sonny Bradley; 4 sisters, Connie Hawk, Shirley Snodgrass, Bernice Glasscock, and Carol Haught; 3 brothers-in-law, Richard (Anita) Fletcher, Stephen (Pati) Fletcher, and Harold Moran; 3 sisters-in-law, Susan (Bobby) Cadogan, Susan Hartzell, and Becky Hartzell; a special aunt, Stella Lovett; special cousins, Perry and Denise Rice, Sam and Beverly Heldreth; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Anne Hartzell who died Jan. 23, 2003; three children who died in infancy, Stephen, Stephanie, and Stanley; 6 brothers, Donald, Richard, Rusty and Jim Hartzell, Buddy and Rick Bradley; and one sister, “Sis” Moran.

Robert was a United States Army Veteran having served in the Korean War. He retired from Eastern Coal Co. JoAnn Mine in Rachel. He was a faithful member of the Downs United Methodist Church in Rachel. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, traveling and cooking. He lived for his family.

Family and friends may call at the Masters Funeral Home, 209 Main St., Mannington, Sunday, February 9, 2020 from 12-8:00pm as well as Monday, February 10, 2020 from 9-11:00am. Funeral services will begin at 11:00pm. Interment will follow at Viewpoint Cemetery in Rachel. In lieu of flowers, please donate a memorial contribution to the charity of one’s choice. We are so sorry about your loss. Mustard is so upset, hes been talking about how he, Bob and Chicken ginseng hunted in their younger days and about how they all worked together at the mine. He will be missed, its still unbelievable. It’s so hard to loose your father, and grandfather. Bob was definitely one of a kind.
